Cloud Security's About the Details

How would an Amazon Web Services attacker manage to get their instance loaded on the same physical machine, given that an EC2 customer ostensibly has no control over where in the cloud they are located (beyond some control over the geographical region where they are loaded)? It would seem pretty difficult, but this provides for a perfect example of the sort of ingenuity that cloud attackers can dream up. A team of researchers at MIT and UCSD wrote a paper on research in which they used what they called “cloud cartography” to learn about the mapping of new instances spawned within EC2 to physical IP addresses within Amazon address spaces. CSI Filter II: Call for Presentations

CSI Filter is the leading virtual security conference connecting hundreds of security professionals from the convenience of their office. Filter is about the content, about the learning experience, about helping security professionals interact with colleagues.

CSI is looking for innovative and focused content addressing trend-changing developments in information security to be featured in Filter II. We welcome video as a supplement to your submission. The deadline for submissions is October 1.

Selection Criteria
Each submission is rated based on the proposal's concept, depth, organization and speaker's credentials.

Speaker Obligations
As part of your speaking obligation, you are required to provide all relevant materials (video/slides/presentation materials) to CSI by the stated deadlines. Upon acceptance, you will be notified of the deadline for materials. The submitter agrees to be available for Q&A on the day of the event, November 18, 2010. Acceptance of your proposal does not include compensation for your participation or for your expenses.

Submission Guidelines
Your proposal must be submitted online by October 1, 2010.
During the submission process, you will be asked for the following pieces of information:

  1. Keywords
  2. Submission Title
  3. Presentation Description (Please keep to no more than 50 words)
  4. Optional: Video Submission (Please refer to Video Submission Criteria below)
  5. All Speaker Contact Information and Bios

You are required to enter all pieces of information in order to complete your submission.

Video Submission Criteria
We welcome video as a supplement to your submission.

Each participant represents and warrants that the submission is: (a) wholly original; (b) does not incorporate or include anything that would require the consent of any third party; and (c) does not violate any copyright, trademark, publicity right, privacy right, or any other right of any third party. Video submissions must be no longer than fifteen minutes in length or less.

Speaker Notification
Speaker acceptances and notifications will go out by October 15, 2010. Accepted descriptions and speaker bios will be published on the conference website.
